Substitute Teacher

  • Hours: Varies according to coverage needed
  • Classification: Non Exempt
  • Summary of Position: Assist the experienced classroom teaching team in the implementation and supervision of a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate classroom, and adherence to the philosophies and standards and practices as established by NAEYC and in accordance with the mission of Alef-Bet.

  • Education:
    • Preferred: CPR and First Aid Certification
    • Preferred: Associates or Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education
    • Required: Mass. Dept. of EEC Teacher Certification

  • Experience:
    • Required: Prior successful experience with young children
    • Preferred: Prior successful experience in a Teacher position with young children
    • Judaic knowledge

    • Ability to successfully attend to several tasks at once, as well as to maintain focused attention for significant periods of time

    Required Physical Abilities:

    • Ability to sit on floor, reach, bend and position self at child's level for sustained periods of time
    • Ability to assist or lift a child up to 45 pounds (ALEF), 55 pounds (BET and GIMMEL) , if necessary
    • Stamina to maintain focused attention and activity
    • Ability to perform small-motor / eye-hand coordination tasks
    • Ability to maintain visual and auditory supervision
  • Other Essential Functions:

    • Understand, respect and maintain confidentiality and the NAEYC Code of Professional Conduct
    • Understand and implement mandated reporting obligations
    • Assist the classroom teaching team to provide appropriate supervision to ensure a healthy, safe and clean learning environment
    • Assist the classroom teaching team to support children in their activities
    • Implement positive guidance strategies consistent with Alef-Bet philosophy and Behavior Management Plan and practices, and when applicable, in conjunction with any outlined in a child's IEP
    • Demonstrate positive interaction with parents
    • Ability to work well with other staff, parents and volunteers and to contribute to a successful team approach
  • Non-Essential Functions:

    • Perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned by classroom teacher or administrative staff

  • Supervision to be received: Frequency of Supervision with Director depends on frequency of substituting
